Devon, or Devonshire, is a county in the South West of England. The city of Exeter is the county town. The county’s coastline has cliffs and sandy beaches and a lot of the economy is based on tourism with seaside resorts in the bays.

The climate in the county is relatively mild compared to the rest of the country and so it is popular with domestic holiday-goers. Further attraction is the national parks in Devon that make this a perfect spot for tourists.

The neighbourhood

There are more than a million people living in Devon, but the population density of the county is low compares to other parts of England. It is a fairly rural county with a lot of hilly landscapes and huge open spaces.

The coastal borough of Torbay in Devon has even been nicknamed the ‘English Riviera’ because of the resorts, sandy beaches and mild climate. The major towns in the county, Exeter and Plymouth, have visitor attractions aplenty.

Trends

Many of the core industries in the county- fishing, mining and farming- have seen a decline, however, agriculture is on the rise again. A strong local food sector has developed with artisanal producers thriving.

As well as this, there are businesses that are choosing to locate in the county due to the appealing lifestyle that it brings with it. Dartmoor has seen the financial services sector grow as well as other businesses that don’t rely on specific geographical location.

There is also a large percentage of retirees in the county that have moved there from other less climatically agreeable places in the country.

Sector Spotlight: Tourism

There are good transport links in the county from other parts of the UK and this adds to the appeal of Devon as a holiday destination. The artisanal produce in the area has also become a draw for people.

There are numerous markets and restaurants that have gained notoriety that have become destinations for foodies from all over. Devon is also known for its cider that is known as ‘scrumpy’.

Business tourism is also popular with multiple conference venues across the county. But of course, the most notable tourism is in summer when people flock to the sandy beaches.

Is this area for you?

If you have always wanted to get into the tourism industry, this county is perfect for you. There will be plenty of people looking to visit Devon that you will be able to target.

This is also the perfect location for anyone who is looking to buy a farm and produce artisan goods that can be sold to local restaurants, at markets to or other parts of the country.

New opportunities for SMEs are being pushed in the county as business support specialists Inspire have launched in Devon. The business will help to scale-up fast-growing businesses. This is great for anyone who is looking to grow their SME.

These opportunities that exist in the county make it the ideal location for anyone who wants to have a great lifestyle alongside their business.
