The office – do we still need it?

Whether it’s a humble cubicle, or a grand corner office with a panoramic, cityscape view, most of us have at some point spent time in a work space of some sort.

The concept of the office space predates the Industrial Revolution, and over the centuries it has evolved into the modern-day workplace as we know it. Today, the office comes in countless shapes and sizes, from large corporate headquarters to more casual, creative and collaborative spaces.

Be it a quiet corner or a bustling boardroom, the office is where we go to earn our living, and where many of us spend the majority of our time. However, in recent years the growing popularity of virtual offices, home offices and telework arrangements has raised the question of whether we still need office space.

Is the office still relevant in the 21 st  Century?

The “desk job” has transformed to the point where many workers today are able to effectively perform their daily tasks from anywhere they wish thanks to mobile technology; so why shouldn’t they?

On the other hand, there are a number of reasons why the more traditional idea of an office still is – and always will be – a part of our working lives.

Meetings:

While internal meetings and collaborations can easily take place online, many companies still rely on their office as a place to meet with clients. Regardless of your industry, you’ll most likely agree that a dedicated work space, branded to represent your business and supplied with all the necessary resources, makes for a more productive (and private) meeting venue than a crowded coffee shop or a home office.

Motivation:

While some workers may have the discipline needed to work remotely, many others find that the obligation to be present in the office at a certain time every day motivates them to be punctual, proactive and productive at work.

Money:

While renting an office requires a certain amount of investment, it’s not necessarily more expensive than teleworking or remote working arrangements. Managed and serviced officesolutions give business owners the opportunity to rent a workspace on flexible terms with minimal extra costs, anywhere across the globe.

Compare this to the expense involved in setting up the company infrastructure needed for productive teleworking, and often you’ll find a centralised office makes financial sense.

Collaboration:

The modern office needn’t be a place of isolation – far from it; a central hub allows co-workers to discuss projects and share creative ideas. In the case of an office building or business park, your business also has the opportunity to network with other companies, meet potential clients and make valuable connections.

Many businesses are also opting for shared office space with other companies, creating a more vibrant and dynamic workplace while cutting down on costs at the same time.

The modern-day workplace may be changing and evolving, but it’s safe to say it won’t be disappearing in the foreseeable future.
