Yahoo 'bans staff from remote working'

Yahoo has told all of its members of staff they will no longer be able to work from home and must relocate back to their nearest office by June.

Chief executive Marissa Mayer has made the bold move in order to ensure all of her team are working under one roof. She believes that the best ideas are delivered when colleagues are able to talk to each other, perhaps in the canteen or in the corridors.

A memo was sent to employees last week by human resources chief Jackie Reses and it read: "To become the absolute best place to work, communication and collaboration will be important, so we need to be working side-by-side. That is why it is critical that we are all present in our offices."

Ms Mayer is keen for Yahoo staff to meet new colleagues on a regular basis and hold impromptu meetings that could lead to productive plans being drawn up or ideas being shared. She believes that speed and quality can sometimes be sacrificed by those who are able to work from home.

The former Google boss is famous for returning to work at Yahoo just weeks after giving birth, underlining her own commitment to getting on with the task at hand. Some of the firm's employees might not feel the same, especially those who will have to relocate in order to be within a commutable distance of an office.

Should the plan take off among other businesses across various sectors, including those in the UK, it might be wise for directors and executives to consider whether they have enough space to house all their workers. If they do not, investing in extra commercial property could be a shrewd move in order to get everybody under one roof.

It might not be a popular move with everybody, but if it gets Yahoo on the right track it will have been a shrewd one and something that other firms may wish to replicate.
